PCOS and Our Faith

Thursday, February 07, 2019

I’ve been having second thoughts about writing and publishing this post because of its very personal nature. Now that you’re reading this means I’ve battled my insecurities and went ahead with it.

A few years back, I was diagnosed with PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome which is somewhat common in women these days. It basically means we produce higher-than-normal amount of male hormones which then causes hormonal imbalance that results to skipped monthly periods or longer period cycles. The main effect of PCOS is the smallest chance of getting pregnant. This and obesity were effects that I am currently dealing with.

How we found out

When I was younger, I had a regular period. But after I got married, I noticed some changes like delays or skipped periods. I thought it was normal so life just went on for me. I didn’t get my period for six months at the most. “It’s because of the weather,” I tell myself, since it was winter season in Doha. And I “read” that the cold can affect a woman’s body. Any nonsense I could think of was an excuse not to go to the doctor.

Then there was the sudden change in my body. I was gaining weight recklessly and any attempt of weight management wouldn’t help. We even bought an elliptical trainer, a yoga mat, a bunch of sports bras and a Polar heart sensor for crying out loud. I would see other women who would lose weight with a snap of the fingers and I would envy them.

I went to my OB-Gyn and she had me get an ultrasound, she immediately diagnosed me with PCOS after seeing my results. That’s when we decided to go ahead with treatment and fertility work-up tests which included a sperm count exam for my husband.

The Work-up

We did all blood test and scans for fertility and I was on medication for at least 6 months (shhh, I’m bad at taking meds.)  Honestly speaking, I grew tired of the medication, so I stopped them altogether and prayed to God for healing. After a couple of years, the result still showed that I have PCOS, even a few weeks before we knew of the pregnancy.

We decided to have another shot at fertility work-ups and I promised myself to take my medications religiously. But God had other plans. We cannot convince God to give us what we want when we want it. His timing is always perfect. I became pregnant without starting with another cycle of work-ups and everything went in accordance to God’s will and His perfect timing.

Now

I still have PCOS, but now I know that God will give us the desires of our hearts if we pray and wait on His will. He has done it before, even during the time of Abraham and Sarah, and we believe He will make it happen again.
